Just got a call from a customer who’s stuck upstate. The garage he’s at told him that he needs a new fuel pump and that in order to install it they have to take the gas tank down and completely disassemble his rear suspension for a cost of over $1,200. Now taking the gas tank down to install a fuel pump is the most common way to access it EXCEPT of course, in this Volvo. His fuel pump can be accessed under the rear third seat and it’s pretty easy to get to. I told him we would do the entire job for $700. The good news is that I have my customers well trained to call me whenever they have a problem and I was able to walk him through it.
So the question remains, is that mechanic just a thief or is he ignorant, well I guess we’ll never know. What we do know now is that he’s busted and my customer is now armed with the correct info and will be moving his car to another shop who’ll treat him better. This is a recurring theme in many of my posts, how to assure you’re not getting screwed over and it just keeps coming back to asking a lot of questions, doing as much homework as possible and doing your best to find an honest mechanic in the first place.
